OUTLOOK

After three years as coach at Servite, Smith took over for Bob Serven, now an assistant at Santa Margarita. He inherited one of the taller teams in the league, but because he took over the program in mid-September, he said he’s worried the Sailors may not be on the same page for a while. “We’re still learning stuff everyday,” he said. “Other teams have played all summer and all fall--they’re polishing, while we’re still learning. By the time league rolls around, my players will be acclimated to my style and demands, and hopefully we’ll be in the thick of things.” Smith said Shoukry, who averaged 8.7 rebounds last year, needs be more consistent. “He has times when he is very good, and times when he is very bad,” he said. “He’s also emotional and energetic, and wears his emotions on a sleeve. He needs to not get too high, and not get too low.” Tayyar gives Newport solid leadership, and according to Smith, is a prototypal point guard. “He’s a good ballhandler, is very quick, and makes good decisions,” he said. “He’s someone you want to have the ball a lot.”
