OUTLOOK

For the first time in Dignan’s five years as head coach of the Pioneers, he will have all seniors and juniors starting. Sesma was a first-team Academy League selection, and Trebels was picked to the second team last season. The Pioneers plan to play at least eight players a game, and they should benefit from having played together for a full year. Through teamwork, Dignan thinks his team can slip into a playoff spot behind St. Margaret’s and Liberty Christian. St. Michael’s was counting on having another big man in the lineup, but Mahammud Al-Hamad broke his foot and will miss the season. Dignan is used to adversity, however. When he inherited the program five years ago, the principal did not allow any nonleague games or home games; it seems that he was from the old school and thought sports were for entertainment only and should not be played within the confines of St. Michael’s. Dignan has since been allowed a nonleague schedule and league games to be played in the Pioneers’ home gymnasium. St. Michael’s plays host to some key games late in the season, with Liberty Christian on Feb. 1 and St. Margaret’s Feb. 8.
