Miami of Ohio was supposed to be one of the top five college hockey teams in the country. Perhaps the Redskins are just realizing it now.

Miami beat New Hampshire, 6-2, to win the championship of the Great Western Bank Freeze-Out on Sunday in the Forum.

Miami (4-5-1), which had failed to meet expectations in the early part of the season, dominated much of the game in front of 4,007 fans, beating a team ranked in the top 10 in several polls.

The Redskins jumped to a 4-0 lead midway through the second period, before New Hampshire scored two goals 63 seconds apart to cut the deficit. But Miami put away the Wildcats (9-2) with goals by Kevyn Adams and Shawn Penn in the third period.

Penn scored twice for Miami. Enrico Blasi and Marc Boxer had three assists apiece for the Redskins.

Blasi, who also had an assist in the Redskins’ 3-2 overtime victory against the University of Toronto on Saturday, was selected tournament most valuable player.

The most unusual goal of the game was credited to Miami’s Bob Clouson. New Hampshire goalie Trent Cavicchi tried to clear the puck, but instead shot it off Clouson’s skate and into his own net. The goal gave Miami a 4-0 lead with 12 minutes 45 seconds to play in the second period. Cavicchi was then replaced by Mike Heinke.

Miami goalie Richard Shulmistra stopped 26 New Hampshire shots.

Clarkson 6, Toronto 5--Steve Palmer scored on a wrist shot with 49 seconds to play in overtime to give the Golden Knights (3-4-2) a victory against the Blues (5-11-2) in the consolation game.

Clarkson’s Brian Mueller had three power-play goals, including the tying score with 4:12 to play in the game.
