NBA ROUNDUP : Warriors’ Webber Injured in Victory Over Pistons

The last thing the Golden State Warriors needed was another injury.

The Warriors, already without Chris Mullin, Tim Hardaway and Sarunas Marciulionis, lost Chris Webber on Sunday night. But they still beat the Detroit Pistons, 91-88, at Auburn Hills, Mich.

Webber, the former Michigan All-American who was the No. 1 pick in the draft, sprained his left ankle 1:23 into the game when he tumbled over a fallen Bill Laimbeer. Webber was taken to Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital for X-rays, which were negative. He will be examined today at Oakland.

It was Webber’s first game in The Palace as a pro and the arena was filled. Webber’s parents and Michigan Coach Steve Fisher were seated at courtside.

“It hurt really bad,” Webber said. “I thought I did some serious damage. The first thing I saw was my parents, sitting on the floor, and I was like, ‘Oh, man, I can’t believe this.’ This is pretty frustrating.”

Billy Owens scored 21 points and had 22 rebounds the Warriors.

Webber, who missed most of the exhibition season because of an appendectomy Oct. 6, missed the first two games of the regular season because of a sprained ankle, an injury sustained in practice Nov. 1.

Portland 120, Sacramento 109--Clyde Drexler scored 24 points and Clifford Robinson added 21 to lead the Trail Blazers at Portland.

Mitch Richmond had 29 points for the Kings. Walt Williams and Lionel Simmons each had 18.
