OUTLOOK

Mission Viejo finished right in the middle of the league standings, which it doesn’t expect to be when this season is over. The Diablos lost first-team all-league center Jeff Carr, who signed a baseball contract with Oakland, and guard Dave Bayer, who is playing basketball at Columbia in New York. “We were 5-5 last year, but I don’t see it this year,” said Reid, who last season finished his first year as head varsity coach after 23 years with the school’s lower-level programs. “It’s not like we have all-league returners or guys who averaged 15-20 points a game. Our returners averaged five points a game.” The Diablos have only three seniors, including Reid’s son Jerry, who will play a lot. Instead, they will focus on up-and-comers such as Moherman, fresh off football and a potential starter. “His basketball know-how may get him into the starting lineup,” Reid said. Denny, who missed last season because of an injury, is expected to contribute. He’s a promising Mater Dei transfer who could move up quickly.
