OUTLOOK

Belanto, Harlan Peet’s assistant for the past three seasons, takes over after Peet resigned to spend more time with his family, and Belanto promises few changes. “We’re pretty vanilla,” Belanto said. “We’ll do the same three or four things that we do, and, hopefully, do them better than the team we play.” Of course, Belanto won’t have Angie White, an All-Southern Section and county selection who averaged 20 points and is now playing at Nevada Las Vegas, but the Cougars should still be formidable. They might start slowly, however, because of injuries (sprained ankle, back spasms) to Garrett, a second-team all-league center, and an extremely tough schedule. The Cougars are opening the season in Fair Oaks at the Del Campo tournament, which features some of the strongest teams in Northern California. During the league season, the Cougars play Brea-Olinda, Cerritos Gahr, Costa Mesa and Palos Verdes Peninsula. The Scotts, Baker, Garrett and point guard Heyman make up a strong core group that Belanto expects to challenge for a third consecutive league title.
