Annie Ebiner of St. Lucy’s and Warren Wolf of San Marino will participate in the seeded portion of this weekend’s Foot Locker Western Regional cross-country.

Ebiner, a sophomore, won the girls’ State Division III championship last weekend, finishing the 5-K course at Woodward Park in Fresno in 18 minutes 32 seconds. Ebiner sprinted to the victory over the final 150 yards.

Wolf, a senior, finished fourth in the Division III boys’ race in 15:39, leading the Titans to a fifth-place finish in the team competition.

Brian Butcher’s goal with 2:09 left in overtime gave South Pasadena a 12-11 overtime victory over Costa Mesa in the championship match of the Division III water polo tournament.

South Pasadena overcame deficits of 4-0 and 9-6 to win its fourth Southern Section title. Jeremy Estep scored four goals, including the one that tied the score, 11-11, with 29 seconds left in regulation. Trevor Bryson also scored four goals for the Tigers, who finished 28-4 under Coach Jerry Wulf.

An early season matchup between what figures to be two of the strongest boys’ soccer teams in the San Gabriel Valley will take place Friday when Arcadia travels to Walnut.

Arcadia is coming off a season-opening 2-1 victory over Harvard-Westlake. Grimur Axeosson and Chris Roberts scored goals for Arcadia off assists from Chase Linden and Marcus Fernandez, respectively.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Mt. San Antonio College and Citrus College football teams play Saturday at Citrus in the Southern California Bowl. Kickoff is at 4 p.m.

Mt. SAC, under Coach Bill Fisk, finished the regular season 8-2 overall and won a share of the Mission Conference Northern Division championship. The Mounties are led by sophomore tailback Leonard Green, who rushed for 1,107 yards and 21 touchdowns, and had 1,004 receiving yards and caught six touchdown passes.

Citrus (8-2), under Coach Mike Merandi, incorporates a balanced running game. Aaron Meschuk has gained 573 yards and Kirk Compton has rushed for 539 yards. Quarterback Curtis Robinson has rushed for 287 yards and passed for 694 in seven games.

Mt. SAC has won the last six meetings between the schools.

The Pasadena City College women’s volleyball team lost to Cuesta, 8-15, 6-15, 15-13, 15-9, 15-6, in the second round of the Southern California regional Tuesday night.

Pasadena, under Coach Lori Jepsen, swept Ventura in its playoff opener behind Aimee Peinado, who had 16 kills.

Diane Frederickson of Citrus was selected first-team All-Foothill Conference by league volleyball coaches.

Frederickson, a freshman from Glendora, led the conference with 230 kills.

COLLEGES

Darlene May, women’s basketball coach at Cal Poly Pomona, became the first coach in NCAA Division II history to win 500 games when the Broncos defeated San Diego, 70-68, on Friday.

May improved her record to 501-114 when Pomona, ranked fourth in Division II, defeated St. Cloud, 62-52.

Pomona, led by senior center Mildred Conston, who scored 29 points against San Diego, will participate in the NCAA-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. tournament this weekend at UC Riverside. Pomona plays Cal State Stanislaus on Friday and Cal State Hayward on Saturday.

The Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball team plays host to The Master’s College tonight at Kellogg Gym.

Pomona entered the week 3-2 after losing to Western Washington and Seattle Pacific in the Seattle Pacific tournament last weekend.

Senior Matt Mitchell is averaging 12 points and five rebounds for the Broncos.

The Azusa Pacific men’s basketball team, coming off a 97-94 overtime victory over defending Division II champion Cal State Bakersfield, plays at Chico State tonight.

Ronnie Winbush scored 27 points and Raymond Tutt added 19 off the bench in Azusa’s victory over Bakersfield.

Eight football players from La Verne and two from Pomona-Pitzer were selected first-team All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Assn. by league coaches.

Running back Danny Pasquil of La Verne was selected offensive player of the year. Linebacker Rocky Wenrick of La Verne was named defensive player of the year.

Other players from La Verne: wide receiver Craig Stewart, offensive lineman Gus Molina, kicker Jeff McDaniel, defensive linemen Kelly Mattson and Tyrone Youngblood and defensive back Bob Gleason.

Running back Tony Fadulu and offensive lineman Ed Welbourne of Pomona-Pitzer were also selected.

The Claremont men’s basketball team defeated Chapman, 92-74, to win the Claremont tournament championship.

Chris Fosse and Chris Bruce of Claremont were selected all-tournament.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

The San Gabriel Valley Kids Wrestling Club is staging sign-ups each Monday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the small gym at Arroyo High in El Monte.
