SHERMAN OAKS : Firefighters Donate TVs to Burn Center

Grateful for the care given their members in the wake of the Southland wildfires, two Los Angeles firefighters organizations Wednesday donated four televisions and four videocassette players to the burn center at Sherman Oaks Hospital and Health Center.

“It’s a very traumatic and painful existence in there,” said Jerry Hall, a vice president of the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City. “One of the few pleasures they have is TV.”

The firefighters union, along with the Los Angeles Fire Chief Officers Assn., also donated metal carts on which the equipment can be rolled from room to room.

“We couldn’t afford to buy TVs for all the rooms,” Hall said. “But this will help.”

Eight firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department and California Department of Forestry were hospitalized at the burn center after battling blazes throughout the San Fernando Valley.

Los Angeles Fire Capt. Jan Bernard, the last of the patients, is scheduled to be released next week.
