OUTLOOK

Hirst takes over for Jon Borchert, who after winning 170 games in 10 seasons is taking a “sabbatical” from basketball, Hirst said. “If Jon wants the job back next year, it’s his,” said Hirst, who spent the last eight seasons as Borchert’s assistant. Hirst has made few changes while minding the store, and has two starters back from last season’s Division II-AA quarterfinalists. Kroeger, a first-team All-Sunset selection, averaged 17 points during the regular season and 24 points in the playoffs. But the forward is nursing a sprained ankle he suffered during warm-ups before the team’s first scrimmage against Capistrano Valley. Beard, an honorable mention All-Sunset selection, returns to start at the point. Tofighi, at 6-feet-6, 190 pounds, gives the Chargers some height in the middle, which will help make up for the loss of Kyle Murphy, who was 6-4, 250. “Without Kyle, we’re not as strong defensively,” Hirst said. “But we make up for it because I think we’re a better shooting team this season.” Sist should make an immediate impact after earning Sunset MVP honors with the junior varsity. Langdon and Lisotto earned all-league honors as JV players. Hirst said Lisotto, a tailback for the football team, could be the quickest player in the league.
