OUTLOOK

Like Santa Ana, Westminster would like to make the playoffs but will need to find ways to post a few upsets to work its way into the league’s top four. History is working against the Lions, who haven’t won more than three league games since the 1986-87 season. Dickson takes over for Brian Underwood after spending the last eight seasons as an assistant at Westminster. Although second-team all-league guard Robert Ishii has graduated, Barnes returns after averaging eight points as the team’s sixth man during his junior season. Others who saw significant action last year were Davis, the Lions’ back-up post player, and Mizufuka, the back-up point guard. But since the Lions are small again, Dickson will stress full-court pressure defense. “We want to be one of the best defensive teams in the county,” Dickson said. “So we’ll press, play man-to-man, trap; we want to force a lot of turnovers. That will be a key to winning for us.” Johnson, one of the top scorers on the junior varsity, and Yoshizaki, should also contribute immediately. Dickson said Edwards also has shown promise. “He’s still young and he has to mature,” Dickson said. Dickson hopes the Lions can get through the nonleague schedule with a .500 record, and maybe improve upon a second-place showing in last season’s Century tournament.
