Police Praise Garden Grove Man Who Turned In Bag With $782

A resident who found a bank bag containing $782 in the bushes outside his home hesitated not a moment before calling police to turn it in, authorities said Saturday.

Police said Robert Mielke called authorities Friday morning after he found a green vinyl bank bag in the bushes near his home in the 12600 block of Palomar Street.

Mielke declined to comment Saturday, but Garden Grove Police Sgt. Joe Johnson praised his action in turning the money in to authorities.

“I think it’s neat that, given the tough times, it’s right at Christmastime, and this guy finds a bag of money and gives it back,” Johnson said. “It’s nice to know, it’s rewarding to know, that people still have faith in doing the right thing.”

Investigators said the money may have been taken during a November robbery at a Denny’s restaurant in Huntington Beach. Authorities had not confirmed a connection between the discovery Saturday and the heist, but Johnson said the suspects in the robbery had abandoned their car in the area where the money was found. No arrests have been made in that case.
