GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Hudson Leads Brea Past Lynwood

In a game of strength versus quickness, Brea-Olinda’s muscle bested Lynwood’s speed, as the Ladycats defeated the Knights, 55-40, Saturday night in the final of the Etiwanda Tournament at Rancho Cucamonga High.

Brea-Olinda (4-0), defending State Division II champion, got 23 points from center Colleen Hudson and 13 from forward Sarah Beckley, all coming from inside.

The Ladycats opened an 18-9 lead after one quarter and held a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Midway through the third quarter, Lynwood, the defending State Division I champion, cut Brea’s lead to 35-24, but the Ladycats finished the quarter on a 7-2 run, and led, 42-26, after three quarters.

Lynwood, ranked second behind Brea in the state polls, saw its top scoring duo of Tamika Kirby and Tawana Grimes held to seven field goals.

Brea-Olinda’s Nicole Erickson was held to nine points on one of six shooting, but distributed the ball to the inside players with exceptional timing.

In the Irvine Tournament:

Estancia 72, Irvine 35--Forward Laura Czinglua had 23 points and 14 rebounds for Estancia, which won the championship. Jessica Waltz of Estancia was named the tournament’s MVP after she had 37 assists in the three games she played during the tournament.

In other games of the tournament:

Saddleback 40, La Mirada 38--Nicole Wiora scored 10 points to lead Saddleback in the third-place game. Her two free throws with 50 seconds left sealed the victory.

Foothill 46, Laguna Hills 38--Katy Steinle had 21 points for the Knights. Jenny Beltran added 16 points and Erica Hoernig had 10 rebounds in a consolation game. Foothill is 3-1, an improvement over the last two seasons, when the Knights won only one game.

Orange Lutheran 52, Anaheim 38--Jennifer Zweib scored 11 points and Lori Wright added 10 to lead Orange Lutheran (1-2) in the consolation round. Stephanie Durrett had a game-high 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead Anaheim.

In the Fullerton Tournament:

Rosary 53, Katella 46--Jennifer Chey had 19 points and was named tournament MVP as the undefeated Royals (4-0) won the championship.

In the Woodbridge Tournament:

Fountain Valley 58, Costa Mesa 48--Nicole Strange had 13 rebounds and seven steals for Fountain Valley (1-0) in a first-round game.
