L.A.’s BEST Boosted by $550,000 From Gala

L.A.’s BEST (Better Educated Students for Tomorrow) raised $550,000 at its “Celebrate L.A.” gala on Nov. 10 at the newly renovated Los Angeles Convention Center. The after-school enrichment program serves more than 3,000 children at 19 elementary schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific in Pomona held its 13th annual Founders Dinner Dance on Nov. 6 at the Century Plaza. Net proceeds of $100,000 will benefit educational programs at the college.

Five Acres, the Boys and Girls Aid Society of Los Angeles, raised $47,000 at its sixth annual Invitational Golf Classic on Oct. 25 at the San Gabriel Country Club. The society’s programs include residential and foster care, emergency shelter, family preservation, special education and long-term care for abused, abandoned and neglected children.

People for the American Way honored Stanley K. Sheinbaum at its Spirit of Liberty Dinner on Nov. 18 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire. The benefit netted $200,000 for the group’s work to counter social discord and promote a sense of community and respect for diversity and freedom of thought.

Project Angel Food raised $15,000 at a Nov. 19 holiday reception hosted by Emporio-Armani in Beverly Hills. The organization prepares and delivers meals and provides other services for homebound people with AIDS.

Alzheimer’s Assn., Los Angeles chapter, raised $31,000 at the Nov. 8 Crooked Divot Golf Tournament at the MountainGate Country Club. Steven Bochco, James Burrows, David Wolper and James Woods were among the participants in the benefit, underwritten by Home Savings of America. The association provides research and patient care.

Family Violence Project of the Jewish Family Service raised $18,000 at its annual luncheon Nov. 10 at the Sportsmen’s Lodge in Studio City. The project provides services to battered women, their children and batterers.
