Santa Paula’s City Council selected Councilman Wayne Johnson to serve as the city’s new mayor in a 3-2 vote.

Johnson, 52, on stress disability leave from an insurance-selling job, is succeeding Mayor Margaret Ely for the one-year post.

Council members Al Urias and John Melton voted against the Johnson nomination Monday night. Urias had nominated Melton for the post but was unable to garner additional support.

“John is going on his 20th year and he’s probably not going to run again, so I thought he should go out as mayor,” Urias said.

Johnson said that while the post demands more time and responsibility, it was largely ceremonial.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to serve with so much happening in Santa Paula,” Johnson said.

Robin Sullivan was unanimously named mayor pro tem.
