A Metrolink commuter train struck and killed a pedestrian Tuesday night on tracks beside the center divider of the San Bernardino Freeway in El Monte, officials said.

It was not immediately clear how the man got on the relatively inaccessible tracks that run for miles between lanes of the freeway. The man, who was not identified, was the 14th person to die when struck by a Metrolink train.

The eastbound train, bound for Montclair, had left Union Station at 6:20 p.m. It struck the man about 17 minutes later near the freeway’s Temple City Boulevard exit. The train was traveling at 78 m.p.h., its speed limit for the area, when the accident occurred, Metrolink officials said.

The 140 passengers on board were bused to their destinations. Other Metrolink trains were routed around the accident.
