COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Carlson’s 27 Lead Fullerton to 107-83 Rout of Golden West

Kevin Carlson scored 27 points to help Fullerton to a 107-83 victory over Golden West in a quarterfinal game in the Riverside men’s basketball tournament.

Carlson, a sophomore from Katella High School, made nine of 16 from the field, including five of seven three-point attempts.

Dan Hardy and Eddie Cochran added 13 points each for Fullerton (10-2), which raced to a 55-31 halftime lead.

Matt Keim had 18 and Gerald Rhoden added 17 for Golden West (6-4). Rhoden was coming off a career-high 38 in the Rustlers’ 97-79 victory over Mt. San Jacinto Wednesday.

Fullerton played without leading scorer Bobby Natoya, who has a sore back. He is questionable for the Hornets’ semifinal against Pasadena at 5 p.m. today. Golden West plays Cypress in the consolation round at 1 p.m.

In other Riverside tournament games:

Irvine Valley 83, Southwestern 81--Damon Sims had 16 points and 12 rebounds for Irvine Valley (6-4), which moved into the 7 p.m. semifinal against Riverside. Tom Airey added 15 points, making five of 11 three-point attempts.

Riverside, the tournament’s defending champion, beat San Diego Mesa, 121-96, also Thursday.

Pasadena 82, Cypress 61--Matt Kenney scored 17 points for Cypress, which had scored 64 points in the first half of a 116-92 victory over San Bernardino Valley Wednesday.

In the Los Angeles Valley women’s tournament:

Cypress 67, Chaffey 58--Christy Kalbhenn scored 18 points and Jody Caruso added 15 for Cypress (10-1).
