SPORTSCOPE : Mehlberg to Compete in National Meet

Peninsula High junior Molly Mehlberg will compete in the Foot Locker Cross Country national finals Saturday at Balboa Park in San Diego. The girls’ race is at 10 a.m. and the boys’ race begins at 10:40.

Mehlberg was among 32 girls from across the nation to qualify for the final by finishing in the top eight at last week’s West Regional at Woodward Park in Fresno. She finished the 5,000-meter race in 18 minutes 12 seconds to place seventh. The top eight finishers at three other regionals also advanced.

Tami Burchard, a senior outside hitter for the Torrance High girls’ volleyball team, has been named Southern Section Division III player of the year, and Tartar Coach Brian Chartier has been named coach of the year.

Torrance (20-4) won the Division III title for the second year in a row and reached the quarterfinals of the State Division II playoffs before losing to Bakersfield Highland.

Burchard was joined on the Division III first team by teammates Vika Malu and Circe Thompson. Sunshine VanWie of Torrance was named to the second team, as was Stephanie Pfau of South Torrance.

Mira Costa’s Kelli Cordray was named to the Division I second team.

Bishop Montgomery, which lost in the Division II semifinals but reached the State Division III final, had three players named to the Division II squad. Cindy Weglarz was a first-team selection, and Becci Roehl and Celeste Adams were named to the second team. Seven South Bay players have been named All-Southern Section in water polo.

In Division III, Sean Nollan of Ocean League champion Mira Costa was named to the first team, teammate Dan Stephenson was a second-team pick and Doug Keese of Peninsula was selected to the third team.

Chadwick had four players named to the Division IV squad. Sean Amberg was a first-team selection, Walf Coppenrath and goalie Mac Henry were second-team picks and Greg Miller was named to the third team.

The Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team will play host to Nevada Las Vegas at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.

Loyola (1-3) lost to San Diego State and Long Beach State last week. The Lions are led by senior forward Sheri Brown, who is averaging 16 points and 9.5 rebounds a game.

Nevada Las Vegas is 1-1.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s basketball team will play at Point Loma Nazarene College tonight at 7:30.

On Saturday, the Toros (4-0) play at Division I San Diego at 7:30 p.m. The Toros (4-0) have not played a Division I opponent since meeting Pepperdine in the 1991-92 season.

Junior guard Chris Thompson is averaging 18.8 points a game.

The Dominguez Hills women will play Concordia University at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Irvine.

Senior guard Karee Bonde is averaging 12.3 points a game and junior forward Trimeka Jackson is averaging 10.3 points and a team-high 9.4 rebounds.

Three El Camino College football players were named to the Mission Conference Northern Division first team and nine made the second team.

Running back Robert Jenkins, wide receiver Damon Terrell and punter Felix Perez were named to the first team. Quarterback Steve Sarkisian, running back Morrell Ollis, wide receiver Damion Porter, offensive guard Greg Gomez, kicker Joe Furlow, defensive linemen David Haemker and Craig Zimmerman, and defensive backs Jermaine Ferguson and Jeremy Veasey were named to the second team.

Team Toyota won the Western Bank Team Cup Volleyball championship last week at the Forum.

Manhattan Beach resident Steve Timmons, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was named most valuable player. He had 15 kills and seven blocks in the championship match. Other South Bay players on Team Toyota include Mike Dodd, Tim Hovland and Mike Whitmarsh. Each player earned $7,000.
