PREP WRESTLING ‘93-’94: SEASON PREVIEW : Laguna Hills

Share

Coach: Cliff Jarmie (11th year).

1992-93: 16-4, 5-0 in the Pacific Coast League; won sixth consecutive league title, but low section finish was forgettable.

Key returners: Eric Brendzel, Sr., 145; Kevin Ely, Sr., 152; Casey Elliott, Jr., 140; Jack Fearing, Sr., 189; Jeff Greco, Jr., 130; Mike Greco, Jr., 135; Scott Morinoue, Jr., 125; Orlando Rangel, Sr., 171; Mark Zolikoff, Jr., Hwt.

Key newcomers: Thanh Nguyen, So., 103; David Yarbrough, Sr., 160.

Outlook: If there’s a theme for the Hawks, it would have to be “staying together, working together.” Many attended a two-week summer camp in Iowa and more than 50 wrestled in summer league. Jarmie has 15 returners, including nine starters, four of whom are seniors, which means there are a lot of juniors under tow. “It’s both a strength and a weakness,” Jarmie said. But depth isn’t a problem, and from the 130s on up, “we don’t have any holes,” Jarmie said. “We have a good kid out on the mat every time.” The Hawks’ style is heavy on the fundamentals, easy on fancy stuff, “like Calvary Chapel, only they’re better than everyone else.”
