Alarcon Urges Road Safety Improvements

Share

Los Angeles City Councilman Richard Alarcon requested Friday that the city improve safety for pedestrians and motorists by installing a traffic light at an intersection in Pacoima and partially closing a pedestrian bridge in Panorama City.

Alarcon called for the installation of a traffic light at the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and Vaughn Street, saying nearby residents have requested the light to improve safety.

He asked that the $72,000 needed to install the signal light be taken from a trust account established by the city three years ago to fund improvement projects around the Lopez Canyon Landfill.

In a separate motion, Alarcon asked that the city close a pedestrian bridge on Chase Street over the Pacoima Wash Channel in Panorama City after school hours and on weekends to reduce vandalism, gang activity, loitering and drug dealing on the bridge.

The $16,870 needed to install gates and fences on the bridge would be paid through a special fund that the city has established for bridge closures citywide.

The request for the traffic light and the bridge closure will be considered next week by the City Council.
