Greg Reynolds scored a career-high 32 points as Chapman beat Redlands, 106-101, in a nonconference men’s basketball game Friday night at Chapman.

But his two most important contributions to the intense Chapman effort might have been a turnover he forced and an assist.

Chapman (5-2) led at the half, 54-50, and neither team was ahead by more than five after that. A layup by Chapman’s Brian Wood with 1 minute 55 seconds remaining left the Panthers in front, 96-95.

After each team missed a shot, Redlands was trying to set up a play with about a minute left when Reynolds dived and knocked the ball loose. Redlands’ Jason Bragg reached it but had to step into backcourt to do so, giving Chapman possession.

Soon after, Reynolds was driving baseline when three Redlands defenders collapsed on him. As he went up, he alertly passed off to Stefan Mumaw, who made a wide-open layup to give Chapman a 98-95 lead with 38 seconds left.

“Actually, I was going up to shoot, and the backboard was in the way,” said Reynolds, who had a team-high seven assists. “So I said ‘Here Mumaw, you shoot this.’ ”

Reynolds, a junior guard from Saddleback College, was seven for 13 from the field and 14 for 16 on free-throw attempts.

“Reynolds is an enigma in a way,” Chapman Coach Mike Bokosky said. “If you give the freedom, he will just keep running all day.”

Chapman closed out the game by making eight consecutive free throws--four by Wood, and two each by Reynolds and Umahl Anderson.

Michael Anderson banked in a pair of three-pointers in the final 10 seconds to keep Redlands close. He finished with a team-high 28 points.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Redlands 75, Chapman 60--Melody Earle had 15 points, and Heidi Sorour added 13 for host Chapman (2-6), but both fouled out. Leslie Ferguson had 29 for Redlands. She was seven of 10 on free-throw attempts, and Redlands was 24 of 35 as a team.
