SOCCER / ENRIQUE LAVIN : Cesar, Cordova Maneuver Garfield Past Manual Arts, 2-0

With seven minutes left, Garfield midfielder Julio Cesar beat the Manual Arts’ offside trap to open the scoring in a 2-0 nonleague victory Wednesday on the Bulldogs’ home field. Three minutes later, forward Romeo Cordova secured a Toiler offensive shutout on a personal play.

In other high school action last week:

Bell 2, San Fernando 0--Eagle striker Jorge Iberri converted on a free kick outside the penalty area with a five-man wall to open the scoring in the first half. Luis Castillo tallied in the 60th minute, tapping the ball in from close range on a perfect pass by Angel Navarro.

San Pedro 3, Fremont 2--The Pirates drew a foul in the penalty area late in the match so that midfielder Paul Mardesich could convert his second penalty kick of the game for the victory. Pathfinder sophomore Pablo Gonzalez opened the scoring early in the first half on a pass from David Sanchez. San Pedros Marcos Vargas tallied the 1-1 tying goal.

Roosevelt 4, Lincoln 1--A scoreless first half ended when Roughriders’ Raul Lazaro tallied at the 43rd minute. The Tigers’ Oscar Arias scored one minute later to tie it at 1. But when Agustin Lopez netted the go-ahead goal in the 63rd minute, the Tiger defense broke down and forwards Cesar Rodriguez and Vicente Mejia scored the next two goals for the win at Lincoln.

Locke 10, Wilson 1--Senior left winger Ricardo Chavez scored five goals and junior Alberto Trujillo tallied three times to blow out the Mules at home. Oscar Zendejas and Orlando Ortega each had one goal.

South Gate 1, Banning 1--Ram striker George Cordova scored from the edge of the penalty box and Banning’s Alvaro Leon on a header for the tie at South Gate. Both teams scored in the first half.

Washington 3, Locke 1--General striker Elio Guzman tallied twice and Pablo Morales once to beat the Saints at home in a nonleague match.

Washington at Huntington Park--Canceled.

Belmont 6, Huntington Park 0--Jose Salmeron scored twice in the first half to lead the Sentinels in a nonleague victory at home. Eric Hernandez tallied four minutes into the game off a pass from Salmeron. Roberto Reyes, Yohannes Measho and Nelson Moran followed with tallies of their own.
