NHL ROUNDUP : Hasek Gets Fourth Shutout, Sabres Win Fourth in a Row

Dominik Hasek earned his fourth career shutout and Dale Hawerchuk had a goal and one assist to help the surging Buffalo Sabres to a 3-0 victory over the Hartford Whalers on Saturday night at Hartford, Conn.

It was the Sabres’ fourth consecutive victory and 10th in the last 13 games.

Hasek lowered his league-leading goals-against average to 1.83 in turning aside 25 shots for his third shutout this season.

“He’s given our club a world of confidence,” veteran forward Dave Hannan said of Hasek.

Pittsburgh 6, Tampa Bay 3--Martin Straka had a goal and three assists and Doug Brown assisted on four goals as the Penguins won at St. Petersburg, Fla.

The crowd of 23,907 at the ThunderDome was the second-largest in NHL history. The attendance record, 27,227 set earlier this season, was for a game matching Tampa Bay and Florida at the ThunderDome.

Washington 5, Montreal 3--Kevin Hatcher scored Washington’s third power-play goal of the game at 7:25 of the third period to lead the Capitals at Montreal.

Randy Burridge and Keith Jones had goals with the man advantage in the second period, and Craig Berube scored in the first for Washington.

Toronto 3, Calgary 1--Dave Andreychuk had two goals and an assist to extend his point streak to five games and goaltender Felix Potvin stopped 37 shots to lead the Maple Leafs at Toronto.

Wendel Clark scored his league-leading 26th goal for Toronto, which won for the first time in three games.

Quebec 5, Ottawa 2--Mats Sundin scored twice and defenseman Alexei Gusarov added a goal and two assists at Quebec as the Nordiques dealt the Senators their sixth consecutive loss.

New Jersey 5, Edmonton 2--Dave Emma scored his first two NHL goals to lead the Devils at East Rutherford, N.J.

The victory ended the Devils’ four-game home losing streak. The badly struggling Oilers are winless in their last eight road games (0-4-4) and are 1-11-5 overall on the road.

N.Y. Islanders 5, Philadelphia 2--Brad Dalgarno scored the tie-breaking goal in a four-goal third period to lead the Islanders at Uniondale, N.Y.

Chicago 5, Boston 4--Michel Goulet scored his second goal of the game with 3:14 to play to lift the Blackhawks at Boston.

Detroit 5, San Jose 3--Darren McCarty had a goal and an assist in the third period as the Red Wings rallied at Detroit.

The victory was Detroit’s seventh in nine games.
