Quarterback Miguel Meriwether of West Covina was named Back of the Year, Pene Talamaivao of Ganesha was named Lineman of the Year and Bob Mount of West Covina was named Coach of the Year at The Times’ San Gabriel Valley awards breakfast last Sunday at the Pasadena Hilton.

Twenty-three players, selected by coaches and Times sportswriters, were honored at the ceremony, which was also attended by coaches and families of the players.

What could the Glendora boys’ basketball team do for an encore after winning its own tournament last weekend by defeating A.B. Miller?

Win its own tournament again, of course.

Glendora is hosting a 16-team double-elimination tournament that concludes Saturday. The Tartans, led by guard Cameron Murray, are expected to advance to the championship game against either San Dimas or Warren.

The Diamond Bar girls’ basketball team began the week with a 5-0 record after winning the St. Lucy’s tournament.

Diamond Bar center Kelly Morris scored 18 points for the Brahmas in the their 52-39 championship game victory over Schurr.

Diamond Bar guard Jaime Gast scored 12 points in the final and was voted most valuable player of the tournament.

Jeremy Estep of South Pasadena scored eight goals in leading the East team to a 22-13 victory over the West in the West San Gabriel Valley all-star water polo match at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Mike Prefontaine and Oscar Balderrama of Mt. San Antonio College recorded top-10 finishes last weekend at the state community college wrestling championships in Santa Rosa.

Prefontaine, a sophomore who attended South Hills High, placed seventh in the 150-pound class. Balderrama, a freshman from Ontario, placed eighth at 167 pounds.

Tam Nihei (118 pounds), Phil Dampier (126), Bulmaro Nunez (134), Terry Villegas (142), Doug Blake (158) and Sal Bandin (190) of Mt. SAC also competed in the state meet, but did not place.

The Mounties, under second-year Coach Larry Watanabe, finished 19th.

COLLEGES

The unbeaten Azusa Pacific men’s basketball team travels to Hawaii this weekend for games against Hawaii-Hilo and defending NAIA national champion Hawaii Pacific.

Azusa Pacific, under Coach Bill Odell, improved its record to 9-0 with an 89-77 victory over Claremont last Saturday.

Azusa Pacific was one of only four teams to defeat Hawaii Pacific last season. Hawaii Pacific lost every starter from last season’s team, but has reloaded with a group that includes 6-8 junior forward John Strickland, a transfer from Louisville.

Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team entered the week 6-1 and ranked fourth in NCAA Division II.

Pomona, which plays at the University of Denver on Friday and Regis College (Colo.) on Saturday, is coming off an 88-32 victory over Cal Baptist.

Senior center Mildred Conston scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds for Pomona. Jennifer Harney added 18 points, and Vanisha Miles had 13 points and 15 rebounds.

Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team plays the first of four consecutive home games tonight against Pacific Christian.

Pomona entered the week 4-5 after ending a five-game losing streak with a 73-52 victory over Sonoma State.

Senior Matt Mitchell is the Broncos’ leading scorer, averaging 10.3 points a a game.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Jeremy Veal, San Dimas--Veal, a senior guard, was named most valuable player of the San Dimas tournament after leading the Saints to the championship.

Veal, who will attend Arizona State, scored 30 points in a 67-57 victory over Damien that gave the Saints the title.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Raymond Tutt, Azusa Pacific--Tutt, a freshman, came off the bench to score 19 points in Azusa Pacific’s 128-86 victory over Redlands. He came off the bench again against Claremont and scored 19 points in 15 minutes during the Cougars’ 89-77 victory.

MISCELLANY

The San Gabriel Valley Kids Wrestling Club is holding sign-ups each Monday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the small gym at Arroyo High in El Monte. The program, open to boys and girls ages 5-14, teaches fundamentals and offers the opportunity to compete in tournaments. Information (818) 338-6864. . . .
