A 55-year-old man escaped a carjacking on Wednesday when he fought with his captor, police said.

Orange County sheriff’s investigators are searching for two men who tried to rob the victim in the parking lot of a K mart on Camino de Estrella.

Officials said the victim was in his car shortly before 6:30 p.m. when two men approached from opposite sides. One man, described as in his 20s, unshaven and wearing a black cap, dark jacket and jeans, got into the car and displayed a paring knife.

The man demanded money and the car and told the victim to drive, as the other man stayed at the parking lot.

A short distance away, the victim struggled with the carjacker. The carjacker slashed the victim in the arm and rib cage.

The carjacker then jumped from the moving car and ran.

Officials said the victim drove home and called authorities. He then went to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, where he was treated for minor cuts and released.

The man who stayed in the K mart parking lot was described as in his mid-30s, unshaven and wearing a maroon shirt.
