Kenney Leads Cypress Past Victor Valley in Tournament

Matt Kenney scored 28 points to lead Cypress to an 85-77 victory over Victor Valley in the first round of the Cypress Taormina men’s basketball tournament Thursday at Cypress College.

Kenney made eight of 10 from the field, including five of seven three-point shots. Jeff Cummins added 15 points. Rick Hurt scored 24 points for Victor Valley (3-5).

The Chargers (7-7) led, 47-32, at the half.

In another tournament game:

Oxnard 83, Golden West 59--Greg Vandenordel scored 14 points for Golden West (6-6) in the first-round victory. Craige Slaughter scored 20 points for Oxnard (4-7).

In the Pasadena men’s basketball tournament:

Fullerton 75, Santa Barbara 67--Fullerton trailed, 50-39, with 12 minutes left in the game, but outscored Santa Barbara, 36-17, the rest of the way.

Kevin Carlson, who scored 23 points, made four free throws in the last 1 1/2 minutes to keep the Hornets (13-2) out of reach. Bobby Nayota made four three-pointers, all in the second half, to key Fullerton’s surge. Carlson also had four three-pointers.

Santa Barbara (6-5) made two three-point shots in the last 11 seconds to narrow the final margin.

Eddie Cochran (11 rebounds) had a key blocked shot with Fullerton leading by three late in the game.

Rancho Santiago 70, Rio Hondo 63--Sean Amos scored 19 of the Dons’ 29 second-half points in the first-round game. Amos’ three-point play with 1:41 left gave Rancho Santiago a 67-60 lead. Amos finished with 23 points and Matt Kordik had 15, all in the first half, for Rancho Santiago (9-3).

Pasadena 74, Orange Coast 56--Orange Coast (7-3) trailed, 49-47, with 10:40 left but failed to score over the next five minutes as Pasadena (9-7) opened a 59-47 lead.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Cypress 95, Mt. San Jacinto 43--Joan Paje, who had just returned to the lineup following an knee injury, broke the Cypress record for three-point shots, making seven. Paje, who also had nine rebounds, broke Becky Wayland’s record of six three-pointers set in 1988. Cypress is 12-2.
