One man was killed and another was in critical condition after a confrontation with a group of armed gang members looking to buy drugs, police said Saturday.

Rogelio Millian, 20, of Santa Ana was shot five times and pronounced dead Friday in the front yard of a home in the 1300 block of West Walnut Street, where the shooting took place. Moises Carbajal, 26, of Santa Ana was shot in the chest and was in critical condition Saturday at UCI Medical Center in Orange, police said.

The victims were talking and drinking beer in the front yard when the gang members approached and demanded drugs, Santa Ana Police Sgt. Dick Faust said.

“They were told there’s no drugs. One of the gang members pulled out a handgun and then demanded money. Millian grabbed one of the gang members and struggled with him,” Faust said.

“It’s a high crime-and-narcotics area but there is no indication they were drug dealers or gang members or anything like that,” Faust said of the victims.

No arrests had been made Saturday.
