If Phoenix Coach Joe Bugel still has a chance at saving his job, Greg Davis and Steve Beuerlein and the rest of the Cardinals are doing all they can to help him.

Davis tied the score with a team-record, 55-yard field goal as time expired in the fourth quarter, then kicked a 41-yarder 6:45 into overtime Sunday that gave the Cardinals a 30-27 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

Davis also kicked a 50-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Beuerlein helped get Davis in position by passing for a career-high 431 yards and three touchdowns. He completed 34 of 53 passes.

As the back-and-forth game between two teams that aren’t going to the playoffs finally ended, the frustrated Cardinals--losers of eight games by seven points or fewer--erupted in jubilation on the sideline. Bugel was embraced by Gary Clark, who caught a career-high 12 passes for 152 yards.

“Joe’s not only my coach, he’s a good personal friend,” Clark said. “He’s the main reason I came to Phoenix in the first place (as a free agent during the off-season). We’re going to dedicate ourselves the last two weeks to see if we can have Joe back next year.”

The Cardinals (5-9) finished 4-12 in their last two seasons. Phoenix owner Bill Bidwill told Bugel and General Manager Larry Wilson before the season that the Cardinals would have to win nine games this season--or else. Wilson resigned last week, but Bidwell did not say whether Bugel will definitely be gone, too.

“As head coach, this is definitely my greatest win,” Bugel said. “There were a lot of heroes out there.”

In overtime, the Cardinals took the kickoff and drove 57 yards in 13 plays to the Seattle 23, setting up Davis for his third field goal.

Seattle took a 27-24 lead with 1:22 to play on Rick Mirer’s one-yard quarterback sneak. But the Cardinals managed to get to the Seattle 37 for Davis’ tying field goal.

The Seahawks (5-9) lost their fourth in a row. The defeat came on a day when Mirer became the top rookie passer in NFL history with 2,576 passing yards. He completed 15 of 31 passes for 165 yards.

Seattle’s Chris Warren ran for 168 yards in 27 carries for his second consecutive 1,000-yard rushing season.

“I would have rather ended up with 950 yards than with a thousand and a loss,” Warren said.

Beuerlein passed 58 yards to Randal Hill, 20 yards to Gary Clark and 16 yards to Larry Centers for touchdowns.

Phoenix cut Seattle’s lead to 20-14 late in the third quarter on Beuerlein’s 20-yard touchdown pass to Clark.

In the fourth quarter, the Cardinals took a 24-20 lead on Beuerlein’s touchdown pass to Centers and Davis’ 50-yard field goal with 9:51 to play.

The Seahawks led at halftime, 20-7, as John Kasay kicked his second field goal of the first half and Mirer passed one yard to tight end Ferrell Edmunds for a touchdown in the final minute of the second quarter.
