PREP WEDNESDAY: 1993-94 GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEW : The Times’ Top 10

Share

1 Brea-Olinda (8-0): Nicole Erickson and Colleen Hudson alone would make the Ladycats a top 10 team. The fact they won the Division II State title last year and didn’t lose any players makes them a lock for No. 1.

*

2 Mater Dei (6-1): The Monarchs already have beaten the San Diego Section’s two best programs--each by 35 points. They were among the top 10 last year, before they got a first-team Division III all-Southern Section player, Melody Peterson, a transfer from Monrovia.

*

3 Woodbridge (7-0): The Warriors don’t have as much depth as they would like, but they have adequate speed with Jamie Oenning, Tami Weaver and Erin Stovall, and above-average height with Melanie Pearson (6-1) and Angela Burgess (6-3).

4 Ocean View (6-1): The Seahawks are young, with six sophomores and a freshman, but they have 5-10 senior forwards Alison Juroe and Farrah Magee anchoring an above-average front line. Freshman Jennifer Tuiolosega is an impact player.

*

5 Cypress (9-2): Jessica Eggleston takes what she wants around the basket; she has not scored fewer than 24 points in a game this season. Eggleston gets help from Susan Flaming, an above-average guard, and forward Julie Adams.

*

6 Marina (5-2): Junior center Shandy Robbins (5-11) and guard Martita Emde were solid before sophomore forward Sonya Bryant transferred from Edison, and the Vikings will be even better when opponents come up against Bryant.

*

7 Estancia (8-1): The Eagles are deep and talented. Senior Laura Czingula is the star, but sophomore forward Jessica Waltz twice has reached double figures in steals and assists, and freshman guard Jenny Jennings could start on many teams.

*

8 Tustin (6-2): Point guard Sarah Davis can break a press, and the Tillers have decent size inside with Alison Carr (6-1). If defense in consecutive victories over Capistrano Valley and San Clemente is any indication, they’re legitimate.

*

9 Capistrano Valley (5-2): The Cougars return a strong nucleus--junior center Jennifer Garrett (6-3) and senior forwards Katie and Susan Scott (both 5-11)--and should excel once they get over the loss of Megan Baker, who moved Saturday to Tennessee.

10 El Dorado (5-1): The Golden Hawks return four starters--and seven players--from 25-3 team that reached Division III-AA semifinals, and have two hotshot freshmen to complement five players 5-10 or taller. Shanna Renken’s return in January will solidify lineup.
