PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Salary Deadline Has Them Wondering

Share

Receiver Tim Brown is not the only Raider affected by today’s deadline, set by an arbitrator Monday, for adjusting 1993 salaries.

Defensive lineman Anthony Smith is hoping to hear something from the Raiders. Fellow defensive lineman Howie Long doesn’t expect to hear anything.

Smith, whose contract expires after this season, said he would be interested in at least listening to a club proposal.

“I’m waiting to hear,” Smith said as he went out to practice Wednesday.

Long, in the midst of a deal that runs through 1996, said he didn’t expect any changes.

What if the Raiders came to him and asked him to add a nice chunk to this year’s contract, thereby removing that previously committed amount from next year’s expected salary cap.

“That would be fine with me,” Long said. “But basically, I’m signed until death do us part.”

It would take a good lawyer to figure out all the angles in Monday’s ruling. For instance, the deadline for extending or renegotiating contracts, Jan. 2, the final day of the season, was unaffected by the ruling.

If a club reworks a player’s contract by 1 p.m. today, any money added to his ’93 salary will not count toward the anticipated 1994 salary cap.

Fullback Steve Smith, limited to special teams play last Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers because of an ankle injury, did not practice Wednesday, but expects to be ready for Sunday’s game against the Packers in Green Bay, Wis.

Cornerback Lionel Washington, who suffered a hip injury last Sunday, was able to practice.
