Nebraska All-American Trev Alberts, the Butkus Award winner as the nation’s top linebacker, said the right elbow he dislocated in the season finale against Oklahoma won’t sideline him for Saturday’s national championship game against top-ranked Florida State in the Orange Bowl

Alberts, the Big Eight defensive player of the year, will be the key to putting pressure on Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Charlie Ward. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound senior led the Cornhuskers with 96 tackles and tied the school record with 15 sacks.

A few days away from the Sugar Bowl, and already the teams are thinking about turnovers, New Orleans-style. As in, don’t fumble away any wallets on Bourbon Street and don’t get intercepted by any shady characters in the French Quarter.

“We had a police officer come in last night and talk to the team,” Florida Coach Steve Spurrier said. “He told us to stay in the lighted areas, to stay on the main drags.”

The West Virginia team was given a similar lecture.
