Wisconsin fans stopped talking about the Rose Bowl around Madison, Wis., for about two hours Sunday. Long enough for the Badgers’ basketball team to make some history of its own.

The day after Wisconsin’s football team won the Rose Bowl for the first time in school history, No. 17 Wisconsin (9-0) matched the school’s best start in basketball since the 1919-20 season with a 71-52 victory over No. 24 Marquette.

Wisconsin defeated its intrastate rival for the eighth time in nine meetings. Wisconsin leads the series, 54-46.

“We’re all football fans,” Wisconsin Coach Stu Jackson said. “Our guys were talking before the game about certain plays from the Rose Bowl without losing their own focus.

“People always want to know if the football team doing well puts pressure on the basketball team. I’m baffled by that. Look at a school like Florida State, excellent in both sports. If we can get to that point, that would be great.”

Marquette (7-3) pulled to within 49-43 with 11:03 left, but Wisconsin went on a 12-0 run.

No. 2 North Carolina 116, Marshall 62--Dante Calabria scored 20 points to lead the Tar Heels at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Six players scored more than 10 points for North Carolina (10-1), which extended its winning streak to eight games. Freshman Rasheed Wallace scored 17 points and had 16 rebounds.

Marshall (3-5) led, 9-8, five minutes into the first half, but made only one basket the next seven minutes.

No. 4 Temple 67, St. Joseph’s 54--Aaron McKie scored 24 points and had nine rebounds for Temple (6-1, 1-0), which opened Atlantic 10 Conference play with the victory at Philadelphia.

“They’re a quick team,” said Robinson, who made six of seven shots in the second half. “When you’re on the road, things like that will happen. Teams will make a run at you.”

Robinson finished with 32 points and had 14 rebounds for Purdue (11-0), which is off to its best start since the 1911-12 team began 12-0.

Trailing, 69-68, with 9:27 left, Purdue held USF (7-3) scoreless for the final 3:51.
