NEWPORT BEACH : Police Dog Dingo Dies After Surgery

Share

A 10-year-old police dog believed to be the oldest active-duty canine in Orange County has died, according to the Police Department.

Dingo died at 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, apparently from complications after surgery to remove several cysts in his hind leg, said Officer Dave Stetson, the dog’s handler.

The dog has been credited with helping police in locating suspects, including a suspected burglar who was arrested on Hospital Road after the dog directed police to where he was hiding.

Police Sgt. Andy Gonis said that Dingo was the first police dog to join the department’s canine unit 6 1/2 years ago after earning high marks during training in Germany.

Dingo will be buried Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Sea Breeze Pet Cemetery, 19542 Beach Blvd., in Huntington Beach.

There are no immediate plans to replace Dingo because of lack of money. Those interested in donating may call (714) 644-3662 or (714) 644-3717.
