PORT HUENEME : General Plan to Be Discussed at Hearing

Share

A public hearing on the city of Port Hueneme’s first revision of its General Plan since 1977 will be held at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Port Hueneme City Hall.

Because only 53 acres remain undeveloped within the boundaries of Port Hueneme, the new plan calls for few changes in land use, according to Tom Figg, the city’s community development director.

“The updated General Plan is more a refinement of existing policy than it is a statement of new direction,” Figg said in a report that was submitted to the City Council.

The plan, which spells out the future of development in the city through the 2015, identifies 18 blighted properties totaling 61 acres that could be redeveloped in the city.

The new plan calls for a slight reduction in the city’s total acreage reserved for residential development, but creates a new land-use designation of mixed-use development for 20 acres. Overall, the proposed plan revision allows the addition of 1,067 more dwelling units in the city, 390 units less than the previous plan allows.

Under the proposed plan, 250,000 square feet of new commercial building could be built in Port Hueneme, 419,000 square feet of light industrial facilities and 97,000 square feet of port-related businesses.

Among the plan’s proposed changes are a ban on the use of billboards, new regulations governing second-story residential additions and permit streamlining for the Oxnard Harbor District.

The plan was prepared with the assistance of a General Plan Advisory Committee comprised of 26 residents, which met 16 times since March,1992.
