OXNARD : State Reappoints School Board Trustee
A top state official has reappointed Oxnard School District trustee Mary Barreto to a council that advises state Department of Education officials on policy issues dealing with ethnicity.
Barreto was appointed this week by acting state Supt. of Public Instruction William Dawson to serve a third consecutive year on the 14-member Advisory Council on Hispanic Affairs. She is the only representative from Ventura County.
The council meets three times a year to discuss a range of issues that in the past have included the state’s policies on bilingual education, the voucher proposal and the criteria for the hiring of teachers, a state official said.
“It’s a wonderful experience,” Barreto said of her time on the board. “I really feel the board makes a difference.”
This year, Barreto said the board will play a role in the selection of a new state superintendent.
The board’s first meeting will be in mid-March.
