East Los Angeles : Students to Train With Smog Analyzer
The East Los Angeles Occupational Center has received a donation of a smog analyzer from Engineering Science Inc., the company contracted with the state to test vehicles for smog emissions.
The $14,000 smog analyzer will allow students to train on the equipment and qualify for jobs at smog-check facilities, said Ben Avila, industrial coordinator for the school.
“To successfully complete an automotive-training degree or a smog certificate, students must have hands-on training,” Avila said. “This donation will give more students greater access to the advanced equipment used by professionals.”
The company also changed the software on the machines to better suit student training, Avila said. The new software will allow students to work on the machines immediately.
The analyzer is one of four that the company is donating to various organizations. Engineering Science closed four of its smog stations and was able to make the donation to the school as well as to the Maxine Waters Employment Preparation Center in South-Central, the San Pedro-Wilmington Skill Center and the Venice Skill Center.
Students at the Waters center will also use their analyzer to test vehicles, which students in East Los Angeles will eventually do also, Avila said.
