Fate Uncertain for ‘50s-Era McDonald’s

A historic McDonald’s restaurant in Downey survived the threat of closure last year, but a city official says the landmark still faces an uncertain future.

Downey Councilwoman Joyce L. Lawrence said operators of the fast-food chain have negotiated a month-to-month lease with the owner of the property at Lakewood Boulevard and Florence Avenue.

McDonald’s representatives were not available for comment, but in the past they have said they want to close the restaurant because it is not making enough money. The restaurant’s lease was to have expired Dec. 31, Lawrence said.

Fans and historic preservationists want the ‘50s-era restaurant to remain open because it is one of the last to retain the chain’s original red-and-white tiled design, golden arches and Speedee mascot.
