OXNARD : Two Ordered to Pay $48,000 in Back Taxes
The owners of a defunct Oxnard farm have been ordered to pay $48,000 in back taxes after pleading guilty to state tax evasion charges, an official said Tuesday.
Andrew B. Navarro, 65, of Oxnard, and his daughter, Melva Navarro, 44, of Camarillo, failed to pay required taxes during a four-year period beginning in 1986, said Rosemary Shorr, a state tax investigation agent.
The two owed more than $100,000 in state disability and personal income taxes and unemployment insurance premiums for the 65 workers employed at Navarro Farms, 5655 Arcturus Road, in south Oxnard, Shorr said.
After an investigation by the tax branch of the Employment Development Department in Ventura, the district attorney’s office filed felony tax evasion charges against the Navarros.
The pair pleaded guilty to the charges and were sentenced last month to pay back $48,000. Superior Court Judge James M. McNally said the agency had administrative remedies for collecting the balance of the back taxes.
