Coach Quits After Dismal Tenure : High school football: Knight gives up after going 1-29 in three seasons at Hueneme High, claims lack of support.

Citing lack of support for the football program from the Hueneme High administration, Coach Ed Knight resigned Tuesday after three dismal seasons.

“It was just a horrible time commitment,” Knight said. “There was only one other coach besides myself who was also on the teaching staff and there was no change in sight.

“I just didn’t feel I could do a good enough job in so many different areas without more help.”

School administrators confirmed Knight’s resignation but would not comment on his reasons for leaving.

Knight, 54, said he will remain a teacher at Hueneme. He would not comment on whether he is pursuing another coaching position.

The Vikings were 1-29 in three years under Knight, including 0-21 in Channel League play. Hueneme’s only victory during the Knight regime was over Channel Islands early this season, which snapped a 21-game losing streak.

A major problem for Knight throughout his tenure was his inability to attract players to the program. The Vikings had only 28 players on the team this season.

Reaction to Knight’s decision was mixed. Some players said Knight was uncommunicative.

“I had problems with him,” junior offensive lineman Joe Moreno said. “He never really had good communication with his players. I’m not going to miss him.”

Others, however, praised Knight for his effort under difficult circumstances.

“I thought he was a pretty good coach,” sophomore defensive lineman Orlando Carrillo said. “I always thought he tried to bring out the best in us.”

Knight said he has no regrets about how he handled his team.

“All coaches have problems communicating with their players at times,” Knight said. “I don’t think I had a lot of those problems, but everybody has their own interpretation.”
