SOCCER / ENRIQUE LAVIN : Bell Routs Fremont, 5-0, to Take Conference Lead
Bell High thrashed defending City Section champion Fremont, 5-0, on the Eagles’ home field Wednesday, avenging last season’s 2-1 semifinal loss to the Pathfinders in overtime.
The victory makes Bell the Central League conference leader with a 6-0-1 overall record. The Pathfinders are 3-2-1.
The Eagles offense broke loose after 15 minutes of relatively even play.
“Their first two goals were a result of beating our offsides trap,” said Fremont Coach Luis Rosales. “After that, they took control and then there was never really any doubt of Bell’s domination.”
Bell striker Jorge Iberri scored the first two goals, both on breakaways. Oswaldo Williams put the Eagles up 3-0 by the half.
Ramon Orellana scored early in the second half and Dennis Vela’s header into the net completed the scoring.

Jefferson 1, Lincoln 1--The Democrats scored in the first minute on a defensive mistake and Melvin Hernandez evened the score from 25 yards out in the 35th minute of the Northwestern League match. Lincoln goalie Jose Guevara made two critical one-on-one saves late in the second half.
Belmont 6, Marshall 0--Jose Salmeron, Jose Ramirez and Eric Hernandez each scored twice for the Sentinels’ Northeast League blowout at home. Salmeron tallied Belmont’s only first-half goal. Hernandez made his team’s fifth goal late in the second half, scoring on a fine individual effort by beating three defenders and the goalie at close range.
Wilson 2, Hollywood 1--The Sheiks scored an own goal with five minutes remaining to give the Mules a Northern Conference victory; Mule striker Victor Arana was awarded the goal. Rene Gonzalez stole the ball from a Hollywood defender three minutes into the first half and passed it to Victor Arana, who scored after dribbling past two defenders and beating the goalie.
San Pedro 2, Crenshaw 0--Marcos Vargas and Michael DiMassa scored on passes by Ive Grgas to give the Pirates their fourth consecutive victory in Southern Pacific Conference action. Early in the first half, Grgas cut down the middle of Cougar territory and made a short pass to Vargas, who shot the ball from just inside the penalty area. DiMassa scored on a breakaway with a powerful low shot early in the second half.
Garfield 3, Jordan 0--Romeo Cordova scored twice and Julio Munoz capped it off with a third goal for Garfield in an Eastern League win at home.
Roosevelt 3, Huntington Park 0--Luis Contreras scored 14 seconds into the game to put the Roughriders on the road to victory in an Eastern League game. After forward Vicente Mejia stole the ball from a Spartan player at kickoff, he sent a long pass into the penalty box where Alfonso Fuentes trapped the ball and shot it. When the Spartan goalie couldn’t handle the ball, Contreras rebounded for the only goal in the first half. In the 70th minute Roughrider Agustin Lopez scored off a cross from David Medina. Contreras scored again with two minutes remaining on a deflection at close range.
Manual Arts 3, Palisades 1--Forward Jorge Escobar hit the ball on a corner kick, curling it inside the Dolphins’ far post in the first half to lead the Toilers to a Coastal Conference win. Gustavo Moran tallied on a cannonball outside the goal area in the 48th minute and Edwin Rivera converted a penalty kick in the 58th minute. Palisades scored its only goal in the 70th minute.
South Gate 2, Locke 1--Ram midfielder Carlos Osorio scored the winning goal on a rebound from a scrimmage inside the penalty box in the Central League contest. Striker Eric Salazar scored the first goal for South Gate on an individual play and Saint forward Ricardo Chavez put in the equalizer 10 minutes later.
Garfield 1, Roosevelt 0--Julio Munoz put in the winner Monday in a tight Eastern League victory at Roosevelt.
