COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Irvine Women Beat Nevada, End Two Losing Streaks

The UC Irvine women’s basketball team ended losing streaks of 11 games overall and 12 in the Big West Conference by defeating Nevada, 59-42, Saturday night at the Bren Center.

Jinelle Williams had a game-high 18 points and 12 rebounds for Irvine (2-12, 1-5), which led, 28-25, at halftime but broke it open early in the second half with a 16-2 run.

Karie Yoshioka added 14 points and Allah-mi Basheer 10 for the Anteaters, whose last Big West victory was Feb. 11 over Cal State Fullerton.

Nevada is 3-11 and 0-7.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:

Fresno Pacific 62, Southern California 50--The Vanguards suffered their first conference loss to the undefeated Sunbirds (12-5, 4-0), who took over sole possession of first place.

Heather Brannan led Southern California (15-4, 2-1) with 13 points and eight rebounds. Tina Demarsh added 11 points and Jamie Zitterkopf 10.

Concordia 81, Cal Baptist 71--Gitte Mejer scored 34 points and grabbed 19 rebounds to lead Concordia (10-7, 2-1), which made seven three-pointers in the first half and 10 of 19 in the game.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:

Concordia 85, Cal Baptist 75--Augustin Harada led Concordia (13-6, 2-1) with 18 points on five for six shooting and Craig Martin added 16 points and eight rebounds.

Fresno Pacific 92, Southern California College 75--Southern California College (9-10, 0-4) remained winless in conference play despite a 22-point effort by Danin Bryant. Six players scored in double figures for Fresno Pacific, led by Tim Butler’s 26 points.
