HUNTINGTON BEACH : City Expected to OK Pier Restaurant Plan
The City Council on Tuesday is expected to approve spending $1.3 million to construct a two-story restaurant at the end of the city pier, which will become the home of a Ruby’s restaurant.
Officials also had planned to build a new lifeguard tower, snack shop, bait and tackle shop and restrooms on the pier, but those plans were put on hold because costs were projected to be 30% higher than initial estimates, said Ron Hagan, director of the Community Services Department.
Costs for the entire project had soared to $2.1 million from $1.3 million, he said.
Officials put a top priority on the Ruby’s restaurant because it will pay about $160,000 a year in rent and profit-sharing with the city, Hagan said.
To reduce costs, the original building plans were scaled back, including replacing a copper roof and sheet marble exteriors with stucco walls and a tile roof, he said.
Officials say they want to construct the remaining accommodations within three to five years but do not know how the city would pay for it.
