Simi Valley Coach Faces Discipline

Kathryn Scroggin, Simi Valley High principal, has made a recommendation to the Simi Valley Unified School District for disciplinary action against basketball Coach Dean Bradshaw for his shoving of a player during a game Jan. 14 against Westlake, sources said Thursday night.

Scroggin on Thursday completed her investigation into the altercation between Bradshaw and senior guard Sam Rodriguez during Simi Valley’s 51-44 Marmonte League home victory.

Bradshaw has been suspended from coaching the team, but has retained his teaching duties, pending the outcome of the investigation.

The severity of the recommendation is unclear, but sources indicated the matter will be discussed Tuesday at a school board meeting.

Scroggin did not return phone calls Thursday.

When contacted at home, Pioneer Athletic Director George Ragsdale declined comment. Ragsdale, however, did confirm the investigation has been completed and that the school board might rule on the situation next week.

Meanwhile, the Simi Valley basketball team remains in turmoil.

The Pioneers have not played or practiced since the incident. Simi Valley takes the court tonight at 7:30 against Camarillo in a league game at the Apollo Continuation School in Simi Valley--but without a coach.

Ragsdale will sit with the team, but said he will not try to coach. Instead, he will leave the play-calling to the team’s seniors.
