City Section Officials Vote to Resume Athletic Season

The high school athletic season in the Los Angeles Unified School District was knocked down but not out by the quake.

A panel of City Section administrators and athletic directors decided last week to resume competition in basketball and soccer for boys and girls. Wrestling begins Monday.

High schools, especially those in the San Fernando Valley, sustained damage to their gymnasiums while others were used as American Red Cross shelters.

City Section Athletic Director Barbara Fiege said that 24 of the City’s 49 schools were affected by the 6.6 Northridge temblor.

Central City schools in the Coastal, Northern, Southeastern and Southern Pacific conferences plan to make up all canceled games. Those regularly scheduled for Jan. 19 and Jan. 21 will be played Feb. 7 and 15, respectively. Games for Jan. 26-28 will be played Feb. 17 and 18. In the San Fernando Valley, games will either be rescheduled, played during a three-day round-robin tournament, or not played at all depending on the league.
