Powell Gets 6 RBIs, Titans Rip Riverside

Dante Powell drove in six runs and three pitchers combined on a two-hitter as Cal State Fullerton beat UC Riverside, 12-1, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday at Titan Field.

It was the home opener for Cal State Fullerton (3-1), ranked sixth in the nation by Baseball America.

Powell had a two-run double and Jim Betzsold had a two-run homer as Fullerton scored six runs in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie.

Powell added a three-run homer in the seventh, when the Titans took an 11-1 lead. He also had an RBI single in the eighth.

Derek Fahs, a junior right-hander, allowed a run, one hit and struck out five in the first four innings. Mark Kotsay, a freshman right-hander, pitched three hitless innings. He walked the first two in the seventh, then struck out the next three.

Tony Fetchel, a senior right-hander, allowed a hit and no runs in the final two innings. It was the first appearance for Fetchel since the 1991 season. He has been slowed by an elbow injury the last two years.
