TENNIS ROUNDUP : Leconte Follows Big Victory With Quick Loss to Boetsch

Arnaud Boetsch beat fellow Frenchman Henri Leconte, 6-2, 6-4, Friday in the Marseille Open, a day after Leconte ousted Boris Becker.

Boetsch, seeded fifth, took advantage of several faults by Leconte to win in 1 hour 15 minutes.

Top-seeded Michael Stich of Germany beat Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7); defending champion Marc Rosset of Switzerland defeated Czech David Rikl, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5, and Diego Nargiso of Italy, a qualifier who made the main draw, defeated Tomas Carbonell of Spain, 6-1, 7-6 (9-7).

Martina Navratilova defeated Larisa Neiland of Latvia, 6-4, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open at Tokyo.

Steffi Graf needed only 42 minutes to beat Jana Nejedly, 6-1, 6-1; Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere defeated Marketa Kochta of Germany, 6-4, 6-4, and Kristie Boogert of the Netherlands beat Pam Shriver, 6-1, 6-4.

Alexander Volkov survived a scare from Sweden’s Henrik Holm before the eighth-seeded Russian advanced to the semifinals of the Dubai Open at United Arab Emirates.

Volkov, ranked 20th in the world, won six of the last seven games for a 6-4, 0-6, 7-5 victory.

Fifth-seeded Ivan Lendl was forced to retire during the third set of his match because of a back injury. Fourth-seeded Magnus Gustafsson won, 4-6, 6-2, 3-1.
