Santa Clara’s O’Brien Loses His Coaching Job

Share

Tom O’Brien, football coach at Santa Clara High the past three seasons, has been relieved of his duties.

O’Brien, 38, compiled a 7-23 record directing the Saints, including 2-10 in Frontier League play. He was told of the school’s decision by Sister Anne Eugene Metcalf, the principal, and Athletic Director Lou Cvijanovich. O’Brien will continue to teach mathematics and science at Santa Clara, according to Cvijanovich.

A new coach has not been named, but Cvijanovich hinted that the individual may have to be chosen from the Santa Clara faculty because there are currently no teacher openings at the school.

Burbank High will announce its new head football coach on Tuesday, according to Athletic Director Frank Kallem.

A 13-member selection committee composed of administrators, players, parents and community members interviewed St. Genevieve Coach Richard Fong, Montclair Prep assistant John Hazelton and Glendale College assistant Robert Dos Remedios on Wednesday evening.

Earlier in the week, a Burbank school district official said that Hazelton was a heavy favorite of the selection committee going into the interview segment of the hiring process.

Davis Delmatoff, the quarterback at Pierce College last season, has enrolled in classes at Valley College but it is not clear whether he will play for the Monarchs next season.

Valley Coach Jim Fenwick said Delmatoff transferred to the Van Nuys school but didn’t discount the possibility that the former Hart High quarterback could return to Pierce next season.

Delmatoff enrolled at Valley before last football season but transferred to Pierce, where he passed for 1,961 yards and nine touchdowns.
