COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Parisi Sharp, Powell Hot as Titans Sweep Arizona

Mike Parisi threw a three-hit shutout, and Dante Powell had four hits, including a home run, and four stolen bases as Cal State Fullerton swept Arizona, 9-0 and 6-3, in a nonconference baseball doubleheader Saturday at Fullerton.

Parisi (2-0), a junior right-hander, had a no-hitter through four innings of the first game, then gave up singles in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings for his first shutout. He struck out seven and walked three.

Powell stole three bases in the first two innings, helping Fullerton to a 6-0 lead. Second baseman Jeff Ferguson added three hits, three runs scored and two runs batted in.

In the second game, the Titans (5-1) were tied, 2-2, but scored three runs in the fourth. Sal Mancuso had an RBI single, and two more runs scored on an Arizona error and wild pitch.

Powell hit his homer in the seventh. Through six games, he is hitting .483 (14 for 29), with three homers, 11 RBIs and eight stolen bases.

Chad Rolish (1-1) gave up three runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking out seven.

Arizona is 1-4.

In another nonconference baseball game:

Point Loma Nazarene 10, Chapman 9--Chapman (0-1) scored four times in the bottom of the ninth but came up a run short in its season opener at Hart Park in Orange. Jason Luciene went three for five and drove in two runs for the Panthers.

In the California Collegiate Wrestling Championships:

Titans second--Cal State Fullerton won three individual championships to score 71 points, 22 behind champion Fresno State.

Jeff Maes (126), Christian Holiday (158) and Dwyane Buth (190) were winners for the Titans.

In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

Pacific 80, UC Irvine 62--The Anteaters (2-16, 1-9) took 28 more shots than Pacific but made four less, shooting just 30% from the field. Jinelle Williams led UCI with 21 points and 13 rebounds.

San Jose State 75, CS Fullerton 66--Autumn Hollyfield scored 24 points, including six three-pointers, for Cal State Fullerton (2-15, 1-9). San Jose State is 11-7, 6-4

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:

Fresno Pacific 79, Concordia 63--Freshman Janee Young led Fresno Pacific (16-5, 6-0) with 25 points on nine-of-16 shooting. Gitte Mejer led Concordia (13-9, 3-3) with 23 points.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:

Fresno Pacific 74, Concordia 71--Vujadin Jovic scored 19 points and had 11 rebounds, and Craig Martin added 17 points for host Concordia (15-9, 3-4).
