Graf Gets Even With Navratilova in Tokyo

Top-seeded Steffi Graf defeated second-seeded Martina Navratilova, 6-2, 6-4, today to win the Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament in Tokyo.

Graf used a strong serve and powerful ground strokes to overwhelm Navratilova, who is playing her last season in singles.

Graf, ranked No. 1 in the world, earned $150,000 as she evened her record with Navratilova at 9-9. Navratilova took home $67,500.

Navratilova beat Graf in the Pan Pacific finals last year.

Sixth-seeded Renzo Furlan of Italy upset second-seeded Richey Reneberg, 6-4, 6-4, in the semifinals of the San Jose Open.

Furlan plays top-seeded Michael Chang, who defeated fifth-seeded Karsten Braasch, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

Top-seeded Sergi Bruguera and fourth-seeded Magnus Gustafsson will meet in the final of the $1-million Dubai Open in the United Arab Emirates.

Bruguera beat sixth-seeded Wayne Ferreira of South Africa, 6-2, 6-1, and Gustafsson defeated eighth-seeded Alexander Volkov of Russia, 6-2, 6-2, in the semifinals.

Defending champion Marc Rosset of Switzerland upset top-seeded Michael Stich of Germany, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, in the semifinals of the $538,000 Marseille Open.

Rosset was joined in the finals by Frenchman Arnaud Boetsch, who beat Diego Nargiso of Italy, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.

With the Austrians missing in commemoration of Ulrike Maier, Vreni Schneider of Switzerland won the slalom at Sierra Nevada, Spain, for her 49th World Cup victory.

Maier was killed a week ago during a downhill in Germany.

Schneider won with a fast second run of 48.88 seconds for a total time of 1 minute 41.30 seconds.

Ulrike Adeberg of Germany won the 500 meters and Emese Hunyady of Austria won the 3,000 during the first day of the World Speedskating Championships for Ladies at Butte, Mont.

Mike Powell, the world outdoor record-holder in the long jump, leaped 26 feet 5 1/2 inches to win his event in a meet at Budapest, Hungary.
