Former Ventura High School football coach Harvey Kochel was released from prison Saturday after serving one year of a two-year sentence for having a nine-month sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student, a Department of Corrections spokesman said.

Kochel was released on good behavior from the Avenal State Prison in Kings County, said Art Flores, a Ventura parole supervisor for the Department of Corrections.

Kochel must register as a sex offender as part of his three-year parole, Flores said. His parole officer is in Oxnard, Flores added.

Kochel, Ventura High’s most successful football coach, was sentenced last year after pleading guilty to having sex with a girl enrolled in his health class. After his conviction his teaching license was permanently revoked by the state.

Attorney Louis Samonsky, who defended Kochel during his trial, said he did not know what Kochel plans to do for a living or where he plans to live.
