A 22-year-old Los Angeles man surrendered to police Friday after he allegedly fatally wounded the mother of his 2-month-old son in a dispute over the boy, investigators said.

Mario Najeeullah turned himself in to homicide detectives after shooting Tywanna Davis, 18, Thursday afternoon, said Los Angeles Police Detective Frank Bolan. Davis had gone to Najeeullah’s apartment in the 1500 block of South St. Andrews Place to pick up the child’s birth certificate and Social Security card, the detective said.

An argument developed and escalated into a fight and the shooting at 3 p.m., Bolan said. Davis was taken to County-USC Medical Center, where she died in surgery of a gunshot wound to the chest, he said.

The child, who is now in the custody of Davis’ family, was not at the apartment when his mother was shot, Bolan said.
